Mic test

Record 10 seconds and find out if your mic is working and how it sounds. You can hear it back, and nothing leaves your device.

Talk for 10 seconds

Use the mic you record with, at your normal distance. Your browser will ask first.

Recorded a full episode? Check its loudness.

What this test measures

Level: how loud your voice reads (integrated loudness, in LUFS) and how close its peaks come to the digital maximum (true peak, in dBTP).

Background noise: how far your voice stands above the room, measured in the pauses between your words.

Clipping: whether any of the recording hit the digital maximum and flattened.

Room echo: how long your room rings after you stop (RT60), when there are enough clear pauses to measure it.

Your browser’s own voice processing (noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain) is switched off for the test, because each one changes what is being measured.

Questions

Is my recording uploaded?
No. It is recorded and measured in your browser, and only you can play it back. It’s gone when you leave the page, unless you choose Fix it in Studio, which keeps it on this device for up to 24 hours while you make an account.
Why do I sound different here than on calls?
Call apps clean up your voice with noise suppression and automatic gain. This test switches those off, so you hear what your mic actually records.
What is a good level?
For a recording that will become a podcast, aim for your normal voice to read between -16 and -14 LUFS here, with peaks staying under -1 dBTP.
